I recently helped our client Mike move his new boat a Roberts 434 ketch from Maple Bay to Campbell River. It was a great trip with good weather most of the way. The waters of the south end of Quadra Island lived up to their nasty reputation for this time of year when ebb tide meets south east wind; but the unpleasantness was short lived as the tide changed and we came into Discovery Harbour marina right on time.
The trip made me realize that standing all day in an open cockpit in November when one is on the upside of sixty is a definite guarantee of aches and pains. The first two legs of the trip – Maple Bay to Ladysmith then Ladysmith to Henry Bay were made in perfect flat calm conditions. The anchorage at Henry Bay is one of my favorite ones.
It is a great stopover point on the trip to Campbell River; but you have to really pay attention crossing the Comox Bar on the way north! The channel is well marked with buoys and range lights on the shore. It gets really shallow in the middle and can be ugly in windy conditions. Mike’s new sailboat the “Iskoteo” performed flawlessly and I am sure he and his family will have a great time exploring the coast of BC on her.
